Discern the Difference
There is a big difference between actions that come from the mental realm of thinking and actions that arise from stillness within.
If you’re not familiar with this difference I encourage you to discern when actions are prompted from mind / ego, and when actions arise from formless stillness and what that feels like in your body energetically.
There are many actions one takes in a single day.
Most of us also carry a conditioned belief that if we wait in stillness for actions to arise, nothing will get done.. This is a false narrative created by the mind so it can stay in control of running your life. But this is not about judging the mind, but rather opening up our natural facility to listen to the truth of our soul and let something much vaster than the container of thoughts move us into action, or not.
How do we tell the difference?
In the simplest of descriptions, the actions we take that arise from the mind are felt as ‘shoulds’ and there is a kind of push from the mind, and with that push there is also a resistance felt, and then a resignation to go ahead and push through. Even though we tend to celebrate that we’ve pushed through and got something done, exhaustion is often a byproduct of working like this in the long term.
In contrast, actions that arise from stillness do not involve the mind in the initial stage. There is an impulse that is felt in the body. An energy that is felt as rising in waves or pulsing and there is an effortlessness. Things organically click into place, sometimes quite quickly when you follow the energy..
When the impulse of rising energy is felt, focused on, and followed, then the mind can assist in the order of actions to take. This is very different from the mind initiating action. There is no exhaustion felt but rather it’s more an exhilaration and actions happen without mental strain.
When the mind is no longer needed, then it falls back into stillness.
How we live life becomes more present of what’s right here and now moment to moment.
Honor your unique ways of working
If you work for yourself, understanding this natural energy flow can make all the difference in your business and how you work.
We are all uniquely designed to work in ways that are aligned to how we are designed, but there are a few commonalities.
- We all have a physical body and this body system is what we tune into for guidance, not the mind. The body system is where we focus to hear, feel, sense the impulse of life’s energy flowing through and guiding us.
- We all have a mind that is loud, while the wisdom of the soul (that is connected to one source, one consciousness) is quieter. Therefore, it requires that we tune down the loud mind so we can ‘hear’ the impulse of our soul and where it leads us. When I say ‘hear’ it doesn’t necessarily mean hear in words. It can be a feeling of rising energy, or a felt-sense of knowing.
- Honoring the physical body enhances our ability to sense the energy impulses within the body and follow that, rather than the mind. There are some things that will help facilitate the ability to listen to the body and the wisdom within the body system.
- Mindful movements, like walking in nature, yoga, somatic body exercises, pilates, swimming. Find what suits you.
- Eat foods that support your body’s health and wellbeing
- Engage in quiet time, whether that’s meditation, or being alone in nature, creativity, or journaling.
Move from stillness into action
It may seem confusing when it comes to following the impulse of energy from the body rather than listening to the mind's insistent loud directives.
One of things I’ve noticed from my own experience is this: when actions arise from stillness and they are correct to follow, there is a surge of energy that comes in like waves. For example, an idea comes to me and if I let myself connect with a stillness within I will either feel an exhilaration and an increase of energy, or not. This lets me know if I’m on the right ‘track’, or not. If the surging energy prompts me into action and I follow that, then my mind assists me in determining the order of actions I need to take to manifest the idea into form.
Let me know how this resonates in you. I'd love to hear.
